The In Tune Approach to Pop Piano
In my teaching, I focus on practical skills, creativity, and personal expression. You'll learn not just how to play, but how to perform, bringing your own style and personality to every piece. I emphasise a streamlined approach that targets the core elements crucial for rapid and effective piano mastery. This is how the In Tune approach makes a difference:
Real-World Playing Skills: The core of my lessons is equipping you with the real-world skills you need to play the popular music you love. These skills are widely applicable, making you a versatile musician capable of anything from playing solo in your living room, accompanying yourself singing, improvising in a variety of piano styles, to playing in a casual jam session or performing with a band.
Rapid Progress: The In Tune approach is about making meaningful progress quickly. My lessons are designed to “cut out the fat” and focus on the fundamentals. We don’t waste time on unnecessary details. Instead, we zero in on the essential techniques and skills that make the biggest impact on your playing in the shortest amount of time. This not only streamlines your progress but also keeps you motivated and engaged.
Targeted Learning: Every lesson is crafted to address the key areas that will improve your skills rapidly. Whether it’s mastering chord progressions, rhythm, improvisation, or playing by ear, you'll learn what you need to excel.
Customised to Your Needs: Every student's path to mastery is unique. I tailor the content of each lesson to align with your personal goals and the specific areas that will most significantly improve your performance, making sure that you're focusing on what will benefit you the most.
Adopting this approach means that you're not just learning piano; you're being equipped with the tools and knowledge to make a substantial, tangible improvement in your playing, ensuring a more rewarding and enjoyable musical journey.

FAQs
-
No. Playing piano is not about talent – it's about skill development. Like all skills, playing music is a skill that can be learned. What determines your success or failure at playing piano is your mindset first and foremost, and then the methodology used to help you develop the skills, and your dedication and commitment to developing those skills.
-
No. As long as you can count to 16 and your hands work, there's hope for you.
-
The easiest way to learn piano is with the guidance of a professional teacher through structured lessons (either in-person or online) and regular, dedicated practice.
-
The fastest way to learn piano is through consistent, focused practice, ideally daily, and taking lessons from a skilled teacher. Using learning aids like apps and online resources can supplement traditional learning methods.
-
Learning piano is an ongoing journey. You can achieve basic competency in a few months to a year, while mastering the instrument may take several years of consistent practice and study.
-
The way I structure my teaching is designed to get you sounding good as quickly as possible. My aim is to get you sounding good by the end of the first term. But ultimately, it will depend on how frequently you practice the content from the lessons. If you don't practice, you won't sound good... no matter how effective or revolutionary my teaching is.

You can purchase a package of 10 lessons for $400 or pay $45 per lesson.
-
Piano lessons are worth it as they provide professional guidance, help in developing correct techniques, and offer structured progress. They are particularly beneficial for beginners and those looking to advance their skills.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither are your piano skills. Repetition is the mother of skill. Repetition takes time. One lesson is not a significant amount of time to evaluate the effectiveness of my teaching or your aptitude.
Part of the equation that's crucial to your development is feedback. You need feedback to know if you're doing it correctly. At each lesson, I observe what you've been practising and give you feedback. The feedback allows you to take corrective action and do it better next time. Without feedback, you don't improve.
It's the cumulative effect of multiple lessons that builds your skill and helps you make progress. Committing to a term allows you to see the bigger picture of the cumulative effect of the lessons, rather than a single lesson being the linchpin of your musical success.
-
Once a week is optimal if you're a beginner or intermediate student.
As important as the lesson itself is, it's the six days in between the lessons that are critical to your development and progress as a piano player. It's in those six days that you practice. By practising, you implement and integrate the concepts and techniques taught in the lesson. If you don't practice, you won't integrate the concepts and techniques taught in the lesson, you won't become competent, you won't make progress, and you'll become frustrated and disheartened or think that you can't do it.
Just having lessons more than once a week won't automatically make you a better player or develop any faster. Repetition is the mother of skill. You need adequate time to get enough repetitions in to become competent and make progress. You don't do one bicep curl or one sit-up and become buff. It's repetition that builds the muscle.
If you're an advanced student, we can discuss a more frequent lesson schedule than weekly.
-
Lessons are 30 minutes.
-
For most beginner or intermediate students, 30 minutes is enough. Longer than that often results in the student feeling overwhelmed, confused, or short of time to implement all of the material covered in the lesson. The point of the lesson is not to overload you with information. It's to give you a manageable amount to implement in your practice during the week in between lessons.
Again, if you're an advanced student we can discuss the possibility of longer lessons to suit your goals.

Yes! I offer online lessons through Zoom. When booking your initial consultation with me, select: Piano Lessons/Music Theory (Zoom call). You’ll need access to a webcam and a strong internet connection.
-
No. Group lessons are not an effective way to learn piano. Everyone in a group will have their own learning style and learn at their own pace. The progress of every member in the group is held hostage by the slowest member of that group. The progress of the group is only as good as its slowest member.
To learn effectively, skill and challenge need to be equally matched. If you have too much challenge for your current skill level, you’ll feel overwhelmed and frustrated that you’re not making progress. If you have too much skill for the current level of challenge, you’ll feel bored and tune out. As a teacher, it’s my job to calibrate the level of challenge to your skill level to ensure you’re learning effectively and making progress. I can’t do that in a group setting where everyone has a different skill level and pace of learning.
In a group situation, you don't get the benefit of my personalised attention to deal with your unique challenges. Nor do you get the lesson content personalised to your musical interests.

Ideally, you should practice piano every day. Regular practice, even in shorter sessions, is more beneficial than sporadic, longer sessions. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes per day as a beginner, increasing the duration as you progress.
-
Learning piano can be challenging but is achievable with consistent practice. The difficulty level varies based on individual aptitude, practice frequency, and the complexity of the music being learned.
-
Learning piano as an adult can be challenging but also rewarding. Adults often have better focus and self-discipline than children, which can be advantageous. The main challenge might be finding consistent practice time amidst other responsibilities.
-
Learning on a piano offers a more authentic experience due to its acoustic sound and touch sensitivity. However, keyboards are a practical alternative; they are more affordable, portable, and offer various sound options. For beginners, either option can be effective depending on budget, personal goals and space constraints.
-
A piano is an acoustic instrument with 88 weighted keys, offering a wide dynamic range and natural sound. Keyboards are electronic, usually more portable, and offer various sounds and features but may lack the full key range and touch sensitivity of a piano.
-
A 61-key keyboard is sufficient for beginners to learn the basics of piano playing. However, an 88-key digital piano is preferable for advanced pieces and comprehensive learning as it provides the full range of a standard piano and weighted keys.
-
When choosing a piano for beginners, consider an instrument that fits your budget and space. A digital piano with weighted keys is a good start. Ensure it has a full set of 88 keys if possible, to facilitate a complete learning experience.
