Your Career/Business Will Only Grow To The Extent YOU Grow

I had a revelation last week, and I want to share it with you because a lot of us experience this. It stifles our success because we're focusing on the wrong things, and so we just keep spinning our wheels and don't make progress towards our goals.

What happened was that I was getting bombarded by emails from a lot of different marketers I follow. I'd subscribed to a few new email lists recently, so the volume of emails I was getting just seemed to explode. They were promoting new courses, challenges, and free video series. It was all really valuable stuff, but I felt totally overwhelmed by it. I wondered how I got to this point, and then I had this realisation.

Often, if we're trying to solve a problem or achieve a goal, we're looking for a quick fix.

We focus on getting the latest tip, hack, strategy, or tactic. And then we try it, and if we don't see results in 5 minutes, we give up on it and go looking for the next one. We get perpetually distracted chasing these things thinking they're the magic pill or silver bullet that's going to solve our problem and make everything fall into place. We're being pulled in a hundred different directions. We have shiny object syndrome.

It's really easy to fall into this trap because we live in the information age. There's an abundance of information available at our fingertips, which is tremendously empowering on the one hand. But the flip side of this is we get shiny object syndrome.

Shiny objects are not going to grow your music business. Your business will only grow to the extent YOU grow.

90% of the game is played above the shoulders. Success is mostly about the Inner Game, about your mindset. That's good news, because we have control over that.

Pay attention to the Inner Game. All the hacks, tips, scripts, templates, blueprints, tactics, strategies, etc. won't make a difference if you're not willing to grow.

If you study successful people, the thing you'll notice they have in common isn’t that they all used some hack or tip or tactic to become successful. It's that they have certain qualities in common. They're willing to face their fears and get out of their comfort zone. They're disciplined and develop productive habits. They're committed and dedicated and schedule time to show up every day and take action towards their goals. They're persistent when they encounter setbacks. They're willing to examine their limiting beliefs and go to work on changing them. They're willing to take 100% responsibility for their lives and their results. In other words, they've worked on their Inner Game, and that's set up the conditions for them to create success in their lives.

They understand that your business will only grow to the extent YOU grow. You could extrapolate that and say that your health or your relationship will only grow to the extent YOU grow.

I’ll leave you with a quote that beautifully sums this up. It comes from Jim Rohn, one of the fathers of the modern personal development movement and Tony Robbins’ mentor.

Jim Rohn said “Work harder on yourself than you do on your business. When you change, everything will change for you.”
