Isolated Piano Track: "Seven-Eighths of Sweet F.A." by Chris Missen

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at my isolated piano part for Seven-Eighths of Sweet F.A.—a cheeky Western Swing track that I recently recorded with Chris Missen for his upcoming 2025 album, Saudade Stories.

The song opens with a gospel-infused rubato intro—drawing inspiration from the expressive phrasing and bluesy licks of Kevin McKendree and Richard Tee. From there, it settles into a bouncy Western Swing vamp à la Asleep At The Wheel that drives most of the track, blending walking bass, shuffle groove, and honky-tonk swagger.

I punctuated the groove with some jazzy fills throughout the arrangement, keeping things playful and light to match the irreverent lyrics. This one’s all about vibe—letting the swing feel carry the momentum while sneaking in a few surprises along the way.

I find it fascinating to hear piano parts in isolation—there’s something revealing about hearing the role they play without the full band around them. Once the finished track is released, I’ll link it here so you can hear how it all fits together.

Listening to isolated piano parts from other players was invaluable in my own musical development, so I hope this offers something educational as well as interesting.
